Every donation to a nonprofit is an act of trust: trust in a calling, trust in a mission, trust that the money will be stewarded well. That trust has built extraordinary organizations. But no shared standard yet exists for what a healthy, excellently run nonprofit actually looks like from the outside, so even the most careful funder is left reading what can be seen, 990s and annual reports, rather than the thing that actually determines whether a calling gets fully carried out.

Here is what we have not yet fully reckoned with: the health of a nonprofit today is its impact tomorrow. We have been extraordinarily generous in getting good organizations born. We have not been as intentional about helping them grow up, about giving the leadership and the team carrying out the mission the same investment we gave the mission itself. That is not a failure of anyone's heart. It is simply the next level of the same stewardship we already believe in, where health and impact stop being two separate questions and become one.

Most capacity-building help in the nonprofit space falls into two buckets, and both have real value. This is not a critique of the many excellent consultants, coaches, and capacity-building organizations already doing that work. Some help teaches, through workshops on fundraising, leadership, or governance. Some help plans, through strategic planning engagements that produce a real plan for where the organization is headed. What is rare in either bucket is help that actually gets a nonprofit to execute that plan while building real unity across the whole team, not a session that improves how a few leaders talk to each other, not a document that sits on a shelf, but a shared direction and ownership that reaches every seat in the organization.
